Kaila's last night

February 8, 2011

This morning Miss Frizzle (my Roman Achievement teacher whose name isn’t really Miss Frizzle) took us around to a few sights in the city that contain remnants of the past/original aspects of Florence. She took us to this one store that is built on top of this big circular stone column that was part of the original walls of Florence, and the store has a glass floor with lights underneath of it that allows you to see the artifacts…it was really neat! She then took us to Repubblica to explain the main crosspoints of Florence and the structure of the city, which we had partly already learned in Art History class with Rocky, but explained everything by using this bronze map that had the buildings and bridges and everything in 3D on it…it was pretty cool! Once she was done explaining everything she let us leave from there which was like 30 minutes early..enough time to sneak in some last minute studying before our Italian quiz!

Our Italian quiz ended up being fairly easy and Gloria gave us the whole class to take it, so once you were done you could leave. Well I ended up getting done really early so I decided to go home to eat lunch because for Art History today we were having an on-site lecture at the Duomo which is closer to my apartment than the school. For our on-site lecture we were outside of the cathedral for most of the class period talking about the architecture and the history of the baptistery and cathedral. It’s so crazy to see the Duomo every single day, but after different aspects of the structures are pointed out to you by an art historian you now look at the buildings in complete different ways. I never realized how powerful history and art really is! Like I would have never noticed that the side of the Duomo has these windows along it and one architect was responsible for the first 3 sections and another architect was responsible for the rest and the two architects’ windows aren’t level with each other. Just little aspects and details become so pertinent and stand out like a sore thumb once you learn about them! It was funny though to sit on the steps in front of the Duomo and watch all of the action happening around you and all of the people taking pictures and whatnot…there was even this bride and groom walking by with someone videotaping them while we were on the steps! My favorite distraction though, was this cute little asian girl wearing bright pink rainboots who would smile and make a peace sign so close to her face for every single picture that her friend took of her..too funny! We eventually went inside of the cathedral and took a look around, but it’s the same building where Danielle and I go to church, so I have already been inside multiple times…but it still is breathtaking every single time I enter!

Tonight is our friend Kaila (who we met in Pisa)’s last night in Florence! She told us the other day that she was leaving Florence to go back home for family reasons, and I’m really sad she’s leaving! Her and I had made plans to meet up at our favorite gelato shop tonight at 9 and the girls and I decided we would bring her back to the apartment and have a couple drinks to send her out on a good night! I was the only one who wanted gelato because everyone had started drinking an hour or so before the gelato date, so I went around the corner, got a gelato cone with Kaila, and brought her back to the apartment. When I got the girls were absolutely hilarious..Kaila was in for a treat! Lauren and I ended up walking Kaila home because Kaila offered to give Lauren a couple of the extra towels in her apartment, as well as a couple extra pillows to me. We got our goodies and gave Kaila big hugs and best wishes on her journey back home, we certainly were sad to say goodbye!

Every night is a dance party here!

My gelato cone that I told Laren to please "hold" while I went to the bathroom.

The Kaila/Kala's :]
