A Waffle with Nutella can make anything better!

February 6, 2011

This morning we all woke up exhausted and with sore legs! Walking stairs and inclines for two days straight has seriously gotten to us. Therefore, Danielle, Marissa, and I thought we would just stay in Florence for the day and maybe take advantage of our museum cards that our school gave us which gives us free entry into any of the state museums. Marissa and I have been talking about going to the Pitti Palace for a while now, so we thought once we all get around and eat lunch and whatnot we could head over to the Pitti Palace and check it out. Walking in the streets on the way across the Arno and once on the other side of the Arno I swear we saw every single person carrying gelato..like what torture! I’m telling you I think gelato is daily part of every single person’s life here! The streets were also really crowded which didn’t go so well with all of our cranky and worn out attitudes, but our art history teacher, Rocky, told us that we should try and go to as many museums possible before like March because the city is going to keep getting more crowded as it approaches may. I feel like there are already a ton of people here…like I can’t imagine more people than this!

But anyways we were walking down the street when all of a sudden there it was! The Pitti Palace is absolutely huge! We found out that with our museum passes we could get tickets for the Modern Art Gallery, the Costume Gallery, the Buboli Gardens, and all of the other complexes of the Pitti Palace. So of course since it was free we decided to get tickets for all of them, and then walked toward the entrance. We had to put our bags on a metal detector belt and walk through a metal detector ourselves and the guard that was standing near the metal detector looked at me in my tank top and sweater and said “it’s warm to you here!?” And I was like “It’s like 50 degrees here! Back home it’s freezing!” But it was funny to realize that all the people around me were in their winter coats and scarves up to their eyeballs..whoops! The three of us decided to go to the Buboli Gardens first and once we walked in we were expecting to see a bunch of greenery and gardens, but all we saw was this huge incline. We all looked at each other mumbling and groaning and by the look on our faces we were in agreement that we  weren’t really up for walking up more inclines, so we decided that we would enjoy walking around the Pitti Palace when our legs weren’t sore and when we were in a better mood..more eager to actually see and enjoy our surroundings. Plus, we could come again anytime for free, so leaving wasn’t the biggest deal in the world.

On the walk back home we were all craving a waffle with gelato and were willing to take any lengths necessary in order to get what we wanted…we figured it would brighten our day. However, we became more and more disappointed when we couldn’t find or smell any waffles on our way home. We knew that this one place near our house had waffles, but figured they would be extremely expensive…but hey, we were willing to give it a try. While we were walking that direction we heard this noise and looked around and found the same group of guys who were playing music and dancing around the street the other night; ever since that night we have seen them at least every other day walking the streets and singing song and passing out religious flyers..I guess they are Hare Krishna and Marissa loves singing the Hare Krishna song around the house. We waited until the group of men had passed the gelato/waffle place before we crossed the street because we were afraid they would start spinning us around and confront us like they did the last time! But once we did cross the street we got extremely excited to find that a waffle with a HUGE scoop of melted nutella poured on the top was 3 euro…a pretty good deal! All three of us got one and I swear the world stopped moving and time stopped for the duration of us eating the waffles…what  a way to make your day better!
